Introduction >>

The Super Mario Brothers 2 that we all know in love in America is in fact not the original Mario 2 for the Nintendo system. The original was designed in Japan ( where all of our good games are designed ) and basically followed the pattern of the original Super Mario Brother except that it was much harder. It had wind for instance, and spring boards that would send Mario flying off the screen. This game was decided to be to difficult for American Gamers ( not much faith in us, huh? ) So when Nintendo decided to release a Super Mario Bros. 2 in the USA, they took a Japanese game called Dream Factory: Doki Doki Panic and changed it into a Mario Game. They changed characters, plants, etc. (More about that on a seperate page.) You can compare the 2 start screens below:

In 1992 Our SMB2 was release in Japan as Super Mario USA >>

America Did Eventually See the Original >>

Yep, we did. The original Mario 2 (Japan ) was released on SNES as "Super Mario Brothers: The Lost Levels" as a part of Super Mario All-Stars and in Super Mario Bros. Deluxe on Gameboy. Not to mention that an 'upated' version of SMB2 (USA) was also released on All-Stars. I happened to start playing with the new Gameboy Advance at a local store // and it was equiped with the coolest version of SMB2 (US) that I'd ever seen. You could barely pry me away for the thing. That game systen will be comming out July 13 I believe.
