Before the OAV series, there was the manga. In all there are 21 volumes. You can purchase these at comic stores that carry imported stuff or atleast ask around.

The first Volume looks like this... It was first published in June of 1988. The last one before the final manga was published in August of 1994. (I had never realized how long ago the original mangas came out!) They all cost about 400Y--> $5.00 in the US. But of course now-adays the imports cost a ton...*sniff*--I'm always broke. Poor deprived anime fan...

The last or "The Final Book," is the most colorful, and is filled with some of the beautiful and original artwork with some reproductions of the previous manga covers. To find out where to purchase this go here!

++The Manga Art Books++ This book is a gorgeous example of the prima work that was produced thourhg out the series. I eventually purchased it at ebay though I also saw it and Anime Weekend Atlanta. The gallery images were scanned from this particualr artbook.
